sketching…a little more intense than doodling

sketch 1

I was reading this great interview with an accomplished artist who called out those people that can’t draw proper but only work on the computer and nothing else. I used to spend 90% of my “art” time using my hands in our world. These days with the occupation I have I find myself spending close to 90% of my “art” time on the computer and really that last 10% is doodling random stuff and new apparel.

So after reading the interview I decided to start sketching again for 15-20 min every lunch period…everyday. Here’s a little sketch of a dude from my bus ride in the morning. He’s a busker who was hugging his guitar like it was holding him up. Sorry the picture was from my phone-camera so the res is a little low.

Layer Tennis

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

One of our favorite designers (and really the other guy we dig too) is going to go to battle this friday. Mr Aaron Draplin of the DDC, Draplindustries, Field Notes, and owner of Gary fame is going head to head in a digital battle with Mr David Nakamoto. We suggest if you have your Friday afternoon free you watch some masters and learn.

Layer tennis is seriously a great time if you got time to kill. Artists lob, spike, and kill each other with graphic elements. According to the Coudal Partner’s Layer Tennis site it goes like this:

Artists will swap a file back and forth in real-time, adding to and embellishing the work. Each artist gets fifteen minutes to complete a “volley” and then we post that to the site. A third participant, a writer, provides play-by-play commentary on the action, as it happens. The matches last for ten volleys and when it’s complete, everyone with an opinion sounds off in the Forums and we declare a winner.

Are we geeks? probably. But this is some serious fun. So get ready for friday and root your favorite designer on.

Cary Judd has been sporting GIV since day 1. Abbie Warnock is just a sick photographer. You put the 2 together and you get a very good thing.

Cary played a show a week ago at Velour in Provo, Utah and Abbie was on hand to catch some of the fun. She wrote about it on her own blog along with putting up all these great images like the one above, which I stole.

So go check out both of their work www.caryjudd.com and www.abbiewarnock.com

USA Today ran an interesting article about KET (Alain Maridueña). Living legend is well known in the community and if you have read Complex Mag you probably know him too. Anyway go read the article and support your local street artists and give them a wall if you have one.
